Three Minute Thesis Competition

An 80,000-word thesis typically takes nine hours to present… Could you present yours in three minutes? This was the challenge that Kelly Michie, a Ph.D. candidate in Biology, faced as she prepared for the 2017 Three Minute Thesis Competition.

"This experience challenged me to learn how to communicate science to a nonscientist audience," said Michie, who tied for third place. "Thanks to 3MT, I had a chance to hone this skill, which will be invaluable to me as I pursue my career after grad school."

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is an academic research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland, Australia that has spread to campuses around the world. Since 2015, the Georgia Tech competition has challenged graduate students to hone their communication skills by explaining their research in three minutes in a way that someone with no knowledge of the subject would understand.
